Pastyme
Pastyme is a vocal group from Asheville which performs a cappella music of all kinds.
Even though Pastyme has its roots in the sacred and secular music of the High Renaissance, the group performs a cappella music from a wide variety of literature, from classical to jazz, for concerts, church services, and special events. The group has no director; instead, all contribute to the selection, artistic interpretation, and development of each piece. Pastyme was formed in 1999 by a group of friends who enjoyed making music with each other. While there have been some changes in membership, four of the original members remain. The members of Pastyme are all active in the music community of Asheville, singing with church choirs, the opera and musical theatre. The group has also performed at numerous venues and churches in the Southeast, including the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, May 2001, and the Cathedral of St. Philip, Atlanta, October 2005 and April 2007.
Pastyme has completed its first CD, Es ist ein Rose, a collection of music in honor of the Virgin Mary. About half of the selections are from the Renaissance era, including Byrd’s Ave Verum Corpus and Palestrina’s Stabat Mater, with others from the 20th century by composers such as Benjamin Britten and Arvo Pärt. The CD is available at Pastyme’s website or at a number of outlets in the Asheville area.
The office of Evensong has always been an important component of Pastyme’s schedule; we have offered Evensong in many churches in the Diocese of Western North Carolina, as well as the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta and churches in Bristol, VA and Columbia, SC. Pastyme is available to sing Evensong, with selected anthems, for $350 plus travel expenses anywhere in the Western North Carolina Diocese. More information about the group may be found on the web at http://pastyme.home.att.net, as well as a brief history and description of Evensong. Pastyme may be contacted at pastyme@musician.org or through the website.
